Noise and correlations in electrochemistry”

Disciplines : physical chemistry, condensed matter physics or nanoscience

The research project

This PhD project aims at investigating the fundamental processes in nanoscale electrochemistry by exploiting the information contained in the electronic noise of electrochemical currents, and the correlations in the noise for multiple nanoprobes. The research project is financed by the NWO ‘zwaartekracht’ program Advanced Nano-Electrochemistry Institute Of the Netherlands (ANION).

Many open questions on the fundamental principles in electrochemistry remain unsolved. Here, we propose to introduce novel techniques that permit the investigation of some of the pressing questions. Individual electrochemical reaction events have long been suspected to show anomalous correlations, both, in space and in time. Such correlations can be revealed by measuring the noise in the current. In our groups we have ample experience in noise measurements in nanoscale conductors, and these techniques can be adapted for the investigation of electrochemical processes. The project will require the development of nanoscale electrodes with control over the size and relative position of the electrodes. Here, we will benefit from our experience in fabricating nanopositioning systems, and fabricating nanopores with embedded graphene or thin film metallic electrodes. The PhD student will be jointly supervised by Jan van Ruitenbeek (LION) and Grégory Schneider (LIC), and work in close collaboration with a PhD student at the University of Amsterdam who will develop the theory and advanced computer simulations for the noise in electrochemistry.

About ANION : Advanced Nano-Electrochemistry Institute Of The Netherlands

A large-scale energy transition of society requires efficient electrochemical processes for generating, converting, and storing sustainable energy. Existing electrochemical processes have serious limitations and are inadequate to meet the grand challenges ahead. At present there is insufficient knowledge of the processes occurring in electrochemical systems at the smallest scale to fundamentally improve these processes. This multidisciplinary fundamental research program brings together chemists and physicists at six Dutch research institutes, to lay the foundation for new efficient electrochemical technologies designed to dramatically reduce humanity's carbon footprint.

Your profile

The candidate should be excited to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD project, which will involve a combination of physical chemistry, instrumentation development and close interaction with theory. You will work in a highly collaborative environment as part of a multi-national team of PhD, MSc, and professional staff. Our lab supports diversity, access, and inclusion in all its forms. We strive to create a safe environment that supports personal and professional growth, well-being, scientific integrity, and stewardship. We collaborate widely with local and international labs, and are strongly driven to translate our research into societal impacts through working together with industry.

Applications are invited from outstanding graduates holding an MSc degree in Physical Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience, or related degree.

Candidates should have

  • Prior experience in experimental work, and preferably have co-authored one or more publications.
  • High motivation for research, and have an interest in theory.
  • Talent to manage their time and progress as the work requires a high level of independence.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • A strong teamwork mentality.

Terms and conditions

The position will be for a maximum of 4 years, and the candidate is expected to complete a PhD thesis at the end of this period. A contribution to classroom teaching (maximum 10% of the time) will be part of the responsibilities of the candidate, as well as supervision of BSc and MSc research projects that contribute to the goals of this PhD project.

We offer a stimulating and interactive research environment, free use of all state-of-the-art facilities, and a competitive salary. The position will initially be for one year, with the possibility of extension for a further three years upon a positive evaluation of the progress of the thesis, personal capabilities, and compatibility.

  • Salary range from €2.972,- to € 3.670,- gross per month (pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3 %), training and career development, and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
  • All our PhD students are embedded in the Leiden University Graduate School of Science www.graduateschools.leidenuniv.nl. Our graduate school offers several PhD training courses at three levels : professional courses, skills training, and personal effectiveness. In addition, advanced courses to deepen scientific knowledge are offered by the research school.
