APM TerminalsDen Haag, Zuid-Holland, NetherlandsGraduation Internship : Scalable Transport Solutions Renewable Energy
Royal HaskoningDHVRotterdam, South Holland, NetherlandsThe world is rapidly heating up, climate is quickly changing, and we all experience this with increasing extreme weathers. Clearly the world acknowledges that things need to be done urgently to stop that trend and ambitions of globally leading organizations like United Nations, EU, IMO are all directed in a carbon emission free world.
And yet globally decarbonization projects are currently in a slow period. Many good initiatives are currently put on-hold, awaiting a more economic business case. Without subsidy renewable products are typically not competitive compared to conventional oil and gas products. The higher cost is mainly caused by the production cost, required new infrastructure for transport, conversion losses and the low energy density or renewable fuels.
Economic renewable energy can be produced in areas with perfect wind and solar conditions, like e.g. the deserts, and then transported to regions with higher demand, like industrial or high population areas. For smaller transport distances power can be transported with electricity power lines, for longer distances conversion to gaseous hydrogen and transport in pipelines is ideal, while intercontinental transport requires conversion to hydrogen carriers like ammonia which can be shipped.
The willingness to pay extra for energy is only growing slowly. The investment in required infrastructure on the supply side is waiting for this demand to grow. One of the solutions to overcome this impasse could be to let the investment in infrastructure go in pace with the developing demand. This would require scalable solutions.
What will you do
You will be developing scalable transport solutions for the supply chain of renewable energy from producing areas to areas with potential high demand. The scalable solutions would be economic for initial stages with small quantities, while consequently they would have a potential to grow with growing demand. Scalable solutions would therewith be an enabler for large scale renewable energy projects that are currently not economic.
The objective of your thesis will be to show the feasibility of your solutions, taking into consideration all relevant risks and potential. These issues could range from convincing stakeholders, limiting environmental impacts, assuring technical maturity, considering safety aspects and certainly reducing cost of the supply chain and operations. Your solution should preferably be suitable for worldwide Clients, operating in different conditions.
We foresee that your study requires to dive deeper into the current trends in LCOH (Levelized Cost of Hydrogen), identifying the drivers and factors determining the cost. More insight in currently globally considered optimizations and trends shall be required.
You will need to develop and consider multiple potential solutions and compare these to arrive at the best solution. You are encouraged to make use of the views, knowledge and experience that is available within RHDHV and our stakeholders.
The best solution will need to be developed in more detail. You will show feasibility in all relevant aspects, identify potential issues to be resolved, resolve them and sketch a roadmap for actual implementation.
Where you will work
Royal HaskoningDHV is a worldwide independent engineering, project management and consultancy firm which integrates 140 years of engineering expertise with digital technologies and software solutions. Our 6,000 colleagues are working from offices in more than 25 countries across the world. Through our mission Enhancing Society Together, we take responsibility for having a positive impact on the world.
As a graduate intern in our Maritime & Renewables NL Advisory Group, you'll join a dynamic team of over 175 experts. We work on integrated projects in ports, waterways, and coastal areas, focusing on maritime and renewable energy like offshore wind and hydrogen. You'll collaborate globally with clients and colleagues, gaining valuable insights and experience.
What you bring
You are a MSc student with proven interest in the subject of renewable energy and a drive for Enhancing Society Together (Which is our mission statement). You are educated on a track relevant to this topic, which could be in economics, civil / marine engineering or process engineering, and willing to operate on the borders of these topics. We expect you to be available to work almost full time on your thesis and expect regular attendance in our offices (In Delft).
What we offer you
During your internship at Royal HaskoningDHV you will learn what it is like to work in a consultancy firm and more specific the kind of projects implemented by the advisory group Maritime & Renewables. You will be fully part of the team and as such you are invited to participate in all team activities both project related and social activities.
You will also receive a monthly allowance.
