What will be your role?

TNO’s Intelligent Imaging group is specialised in image processing, image enhancement, image analysis, visual pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and deep learning.

This young, passionate, creative and committed group (50 people) works with partners on technological breakthroughs for innovations in important societal and economic themes, developing knowledge in various research areas including both AI (e.

g. learning with less data or hybrid AI) as well as crucial non-AI knowledge, real-time algorithms, edge processing and information fusion.

When you become an intern or graduate at Intelligent Imaging, you will work on challenging projects where you will gain relevant experience in your field of study.

A number of themes in which the Intelligent Imaging group is active are listed below, including some specific examples, and could be used to create a project for you :

In a military context it is crucial to obtain a lot of information, but this is often very time consuming and dangerous.

TNO works with the Dutch and international defence industries on the development of unmanned, robotic and decision support systems.

We use state-of-the-art developments in deep learning, AI and autonomous systems to create image analysis systems that perform as well as people, or even better.

For example, algorithms for a robotic system that supports tactical ground operations to detect roadside bombs, or algorithms on board of an unmanned vehicle that detect anomalies in surveillance operations.

In the safety domain it is important to analyse large amounts of data and quickly finding useful information in big datasets.

For example, TNO develops software to automatically analyse documents (such as birth certificates or marriage certificates) to assess their authenticity, or systems that can detect and track individuals in real-time.

For high-risk tasks such as repairs on dangerous locations, for example drilling platforms or disaster zones, robots are an increasingly important tool.

Although robots can perform certain tasks autonomously, many other tasks are so complex, that human expertise is still necessary.

At TNO, we work on solutions in which experts can log in to a robot to remotely help the robot to perform a tasks, focusing on topics such as visual reconstruction of the environment, scene recognition and grabbing or avoiding objects.

As this contains a vast number of different research directions, a more concrete topic for your project will be determined in mutual discussion based on your exact ideas, interests and skills.

Your project can start at any time of the year, preferably for a period of 6 to 12 months. Please mention in your application the length of your project and the desired starting date.

You will receive an appropriate internship fee.

What we expect from you

You are in the final stages of your degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, systems and control engineering, or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of computer vision.

You are pragmatic and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a results-driven attitude to add value to our clients and the Dutch society as a whole.

What you'll get in return

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer.

TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation.

That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself.

Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
