Postdoc Global Health Economics
Introduction
Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) is inviting applications for a postdoc with strong interests in “Global Health Economics” and energy to work on health behaviors and causal analysis of health interventions in low-resource settings.
Job description
This postdoc will work in ESHPM’s growing Global Health Theme chaired by Professor Matthias Rieger. The postdoc will also develop research together with Professor Owen O’Donnell and other faculty members in the field of global health economics.
ESHPM’s Global Health Theme covers the behavioral and socio-economic determinants of health as well as international health care systems. The postdoc will join researchers in our team working on shifting disease burdens and the growing importance of non-communicable diseases, economic determinants of health and nutrition across the globe, influencing health and nutrition behaviors, as well as health inequalities within and between countries. We are working closely with partners in South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The postdoc trained in economics or related fields will be partly embedded in ongoing projects around pressing global health challenges. The focus is on health or development economic research using causal, econometric techniques or RCTs on the demand or supply side of health in low-resource settings. The postdoc will work on impact evaluations of health policy changes or shocks at the local or national level or specific interventions targeted at vulnerable groups of patients and segments of the population (e.g. children, adolescents, families). While first topics and projects have been identified, there is also plenty of room to develop an independent research agenda and profile.

The postdoc will work at ESHPM and focus on global health research.
The start date of this position is no later than 01-OCT-2025 and you will be based at Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM). This position is fulltime. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 4.537 to a maximum of € 6.209 gross per month Scale 11 on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. We offer a 2-year position.

Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) is a leading institute based in Rotterdam the Netherlands, specialising in healthcare policy and management across disciplines like economics, law, socio-medical sciences, organisation science, and public administration. ESHPM educates about 1,600 students and employs around 200 faculty members.

The postdoc is part of ESHPM’s new Globa Health theme. The theme's purpose is to offer rigorous evidence, impact policies and equitably work with partners and communities around the world to reduce health inequalities. To this end, the new theme aims to connect research groups within ESHPM (such as Health Economics, Health Care Governance, Health Systems & Insurance, Law & Health Care, Health Technology Assessment) and researchers and policy stakeholders around the world to tackle important global health issues of societal relevance. The primary research focus in the coming years is around Global Health Behaviors, Socio-Economic Determinants of Health in LMICs, as well as International Health Care Systems.
Department
The postdoc researcher will be embedded within the new Global Health Theme (led by Professor Matthias Rieger and Associate Professor Igna Bonfrer) as well as another research department. The postdoc will work directly with Matthias Rieger and there is an intention to develop research together with Professor Owen O’Donnell and other faculty members.
The PhD researcher will also benefit from Erasmus University’s vibrant Rotterdam Global Health Initiative which links ESHPM with Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus Medical Center and the International Institute of Social Studies.
