Overall Job Purpose
The AMS-IX Team Lead – Engineering, is responsible for leading, developing, and managing a team of engineers, ranging from junior to senior levels, as well as the lab and storage area staff, while overseeing and ensuring the implementation of upgrades and changes in our network infrastructure. This role requires strong technical expertise, with a focus on installation, testing, and administration of network equipment within our AMS-IX platform. The Team Lead – Engineering will also be involved in complex, interdepartmental projects and act as an escalation point for all members of the Engineering team. The expected responsibility split for this position is 60% leadership and 40% Individual Contributor (at a Senior Level).
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Provides technical leadership to the engineering team, ensuring the successful implementation of upgrades and changes in the network infrastructure.
Ensures that data centre work meets the defined Quality Standards of AMS-IX.
Performs recurring 1:1 meeting with members of the Engineering Team, and focuses on coaching up, or out.
Participates in performance review sessions and provides data-driven narratives that justify performance rankings.
Ensures that engineer capacity/velocity is properly planned.
Financial and Budget Management
Takes responsibility for financial management within the engineering team, including budget planning and monitoring.
Ensures that data centre & infrastructure costs are managed effectively, implementing cost‑saving measures while maintaining high-quality infrastructure services.
Takes responsibility for asset management (warehouse and data centres).
Hands on & Delivery
The key responsibilities of the Senior Engineer apply to this role. Responsibilities include:
- Managing the network equipment and infrastructure
- Managing the data centre facilities
- Supporting the other operations teams
On-Call
This role requires participation in an on-call rotation.
Other
Any other reasonable request related to managing datacentre/field engineers, warehouse staff, and datacentre cost management.
Qualification and Competencies
- MBO or equivalent in mechanical/electrical studies
- CEFR B2/C1 level of English. xnkfpon Knowledge of Dutch is a plus
- 5+ years of experience as a Senior Engineer combined with 1–2 years in a leadership capacity
The technical abilities from the Sr. Engineer position apply to this role. Abilities include:
- Data centre‑related and ISP/OSP experience
- Experience with racking and cabling of equipment
- Hands‑on experience with copper/fiber cabling technologies
- Experience with electrical power infrastructure/grid
- Experience with DCI/DWDM equipment
- Experience with and ability to compose detailed technical documentation
- Insight into the structure and relations that make up a network
- Demonstrates the ability to create proposals and strategy documents
- Understanding of L2/L3 networking is a plus
- Knowledge of configuring BGP is a plus
- Experience with Excel
- Experience with scripting (VBScript, PowerShell, Bash, Python) to automate data gathering and report generation
