Sr AS400 Engineer – Amsterdam, Netherlands Location: Amsterdam Start: Immediate Contract Duration: 6 months Experience: 4–6 years Role Type: DevOps / Engineering Stack: AS400 / IBM i About the Role We are seeking a Senior AS400 Engineer to join a DevOps team responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and stabilizing AS400/IBM i applications. You will work across legacy ERP systems, complex integrations, and low‑documentation environments, ensuring business continuity and high system reliability. This role also includes mentoring engineers and occasionally stepping into Team Lead responsibilities. Key Responsibilities Maintain and enhance AS400 applications (fixes, improvements, new logic). Develop and support RPG III, RPG IV, RPG ILE, and RPG Free Format programs. Work with CLP programming, DB2/400, embedded SQL, and AS400 file systems. Manage job processing, batch jobs, scheduling, and system performance. Analyze data flows, APIs, and integration dependencies across ERP and enterprise systems. Support interfaces between AS400 and SAP, POS, logistics, and other systems. Perform incident triage, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis. Work within ITSM processes to meet SLA, MTTR, and incident reduction targets. Contribute to DevSecOps KPIs (DORA metrics, deployment success rate). Mentor junior engineers and provide leadership when required. Ensure stability-first operations with zero disruption during transitions. Must-Have Skills AS400 / IBM i Expertise RPG III / RPG IV / RPG ILE / RPG Free Format AS400 Lansa CLP programming DB2/400 (DB400), embedded SQL AS400 job processing, batch jobs, scheduling File systems, data structures, database design Integration & Application Knowledge Legacy ERP systems and custom-built applications Interfaces with SAP, POS, logistics systems Data flow analysis, API understanding, integration dependencies Incident & Production Support Incident triage and resolution Root Cause Analysis (RCA) ITSM tools and ticketing workflows Good-to-Have Skills Automation & AI Enablement Automation tools for repetitive support tasks Knowledge graph/documentation tools AI-assisted troubleshooting or reverse engineering Modernization Awareness SAP S/4HANA migration exposure Legacy system decommissioning strategies Coexistence scenarios (AS400 SAP transition) DevOps & Observability Monitoring, logging, observability CI/CD and release management concepts Soft Skills Strong problem-solving in ambiguous, low-documentation environments Ability to work with complex legacy systems and unclear dependencies Effective collaboration with SMEs, SAP teams, and multi-vendor ecosystems High learning agility and comfort with reverse engineering Ownership mindset with a stability-first approach Commitment to zero disruption during operations Why This Role Matters You will be working at the core of mission-critical enterprise systems, ensuring stability, reliability, and smooth operations across interconnected business processes.
