As an experienced IT professional with management experience, you will manage the IT department of The British School in The Netherlands (BSN) and execute your strategic vision for the future of IT in our school. In this exciting and rewarding role, you will lead the IT department, oversee the IT infrastructure, security and technical support of all sites. You will engage continuously with the Heads of schools and their senior leaders, managers of other (central) departments, teachers and support staff, to extend safe, responsible and creative use of technology. You will ensure that the technology programme and services meet the educational needs (EdTech) as well as communication needs of the schools. The BSNs EdTech strategy ensures that the learning benefits are firmly in focus and provides the best environment and the best tools for great learning to occur. You will give advice about staff learning and training opportunities to meet diverse needs relating to integration of technology into school programming, and will adjust the onsite support accordingly. You will be part of the senior leaders of the BSN, making strategic decisions and implementing them.

The BSN is based in and around The Hague. We have three campuses which house two Junior Schools and two Senior Schools and another HQ office for our Central Services departments. Our enrolment comprises of more than 2, students, aged 3-, from over different countries.

The CEO leads the BSN and each school is led by an experienced Headteacher. Together with the CFOO, CHRO and the Head of Communications & Admissions, the Board of Management runs the schools on a daily basis, leads strategic change and school improvement whilst also overseeing operational efficiency and effectiveness. A professionally staffed Central Services provides strong support for school operations of all campuses and development in the areas of Human Resources, Communications & Admissions, IT, Operations & Facilities, Finance and Security & Data Protection.

  • You have the ability to generate buy-in; to inspire and motivate all members of the IT team and to deliver projects to completion.
  • As Head of IT :

  • You will lead a team of staff members (senior network & infrastructure administrators, (senior) application managers, data managers, EdTech specialists and technicians / onsite support staff);
  • You will be responsible for the business continuity of the IT infrastructure (network and cloud) security and technical support of the whole school, supporting over 4, users (students, parents and staff) and managing over 1, workstations (laptops and other mobile computers for students and staff);
  • You will develop, create and maintain working processes that lead to more efficient and effective ways to work;
  • You have ample experience with leadership of IT teams, strategic planning and budget setting and management in IT related areas;
  • You will report directly to the Chief Finance & Operations Officer.
  • Managing and facilitating the use of technology across the whole school, in order to further improve work processes, support professional development and improve student outcomes;
  • Management of the senior IT team and overseeing the integrity of the schools IT infrastructure including new systems and hardware roll outs;
  • Continued development of migration of services and applications to the cloud.
  • Strategic long-term planning, development and managing of IT projects and contributing to projects initiated by others;
  • Developing effective relationships with staff across the schools, assessing and responding to their needs, providing them with support and advice in their use of the network and equipment resulting in higher standards of systems and resource use;
  • Managing contracts and SLAs with external suppliers and vendors;
  • Presenting your plans and strategies with the Board of Management on a regular basis, and advising on the strategies going forward;
  • Developing and maintaining relevant documentation and policies;
  • Preparation and managing the yearly departmental budget (P&L, Capital Expenditures and Purchasing);
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of preventative maintenance planning for the network and the large-scale roll-out of new hardware, including workstation product selection and stock levels, both carried out by the senior IT team members;
  • Owning the process of IT calamity management and prevention;
  • Contributing to positioning of information platforms (Sharepoint, website, app, e-mail).
  • IT Degree or similar from a recognised University, or equivalent experience;
  • At least 5 years of experience as a manager in a medium to large IT department;
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks in a dynamic international environment;
  • Experience in a virtualised Windows Server based environment;
  • Knowledge of Mobile Device Management Systems (MDM);
  • Knowledge of Cloud Technologies, especially Microsoft Azure and Office ;
  • Knowledge of GDPR and similar IT related legislation;
  • Proven understanding of IT networks, Cloud infrastructure and implementation;
  • Experience of managing 3rd party service providers;
  • Experience with IT staff training and mentoring;
  • Advanced command of English (and preferably Dutch) language skills both written and verbally.
  • Experience in an, preferably international, educational environment (school, college or university);
  • Database knowledge (such as SIMS, CANVAS);
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CNNA) or similar IT qualification.
